africa unplugged is small charity and we do not recruit volunteers directly. What we can do in suitable cases is introduce potential volunteers to our friends in Africa, especially friends in Nkhata Bay, Malawi.

Volunteers make all their own travel and insurance arrangements and pay all the costs involved including accommodation and meals. We do not offer payment of any expenses but neither do we make any charges.

At present, there is no induction process. It is entirely at the discretion of our contacts in East Africa  whether or not a volunteer is invited to participate in a local project. However, friends of aup here in the UK are usually delighted to meet potential volunteers when it is practical to do so (usually within a 50 mile radius of either London or Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire). We can then provide more current information and general advice on possible volunteering opportunities

If you experience any problems in the area of Nkhata Bay aup Malawi (our main contact area) we will certainly try and help but, in cases of emergency, volunteers should always follow the standard procedures covering overseas visitors. We do not have a formal complaints procedure although any matters raised with us will receive careful attention.

It is very important to us that volunteers respect the local community and ‘their’ way of doing things. Whatever personal views a volunteer holds, we ask that they put aside all matters relating to religion, politics and ethnicity. Our mission statement is quite clear – we are making a difference together by promoting greater awareness and understanding through communication and education.

If you are interested in volunteering please get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
